 2022 Preview 


       Marion County completed the 2021 season with a 7-4 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region six, the Red Raiders earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Marion County's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Decatur Heritage Christian by a score of 48-28.

       It marked the first time since the 2018 season that the Red Raiders qualified for the playoffs.

       Since 2010, Marion County has gone a combined 79-59. Their 57.2% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Marion County has managed to compile a record of 152-122. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 1A and 135th in the AHSAA.




       The Red Raiders are led by head coach Kyle Williams who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 28-34 over the past six seasons at Marion County. Under his direction the Red Raiders have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Williams.

       Coach Williams' overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 28-34 (45.2%).

       The Marion County Red Raiders will play in Class 1A region five during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Red Raiders remain in 1A but move from region six over to region five.

       The Red Raiders will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season.

       The Red Raiders open the 2022 season at home against region opponent Lynn on Friday, August 26 at Don Jones Field at Bill Rayburn Staduim. Last year the Lynn Bears finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in eighth place in Class 1A region six. The Bears ended last season on a positive note with a win over Cherokee by a score of 41-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Marion County and Lynn have met a total of 33 times on the football field. The Red Raiders have a 18-15-0 record against the Bears. They last met in 2021 with Marion County winning by a score of 29-7.

       Marion County returns 1A All-State Senior defensive back Landon Morrow. He was named to the first team last season.

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
